Filing a claim

You will need to file your claim through the mail or by fax. Fax or mail completed claim to:

To expedite your claim, it is important that all documentation be remitted at one time. You may remit your claim and receive a NS claim number; however, processing of your claim can be delayed and subject to declination, if any of the following related information is missing.

Freight Claim remittance list:

  • Your contact information — email, phone, etc.
  • If lading loss is over $5,000.00 did you contact Damage Prevention? Did you discuss the loss with anyone at NS? If so, whom?
  • Rail car/Container/Trailer number and initial
  • Shipper/Delivery seal records if applicable
  • Refrigeration (Temp.) records if applicable
  • A bill of lading and invoice(s) for claimed loss
  • Mitigation evidence of salvage allowed
  • Status of freight charges
  • Pictures or supporting documentation of damage(s) related to lading loss.

If you have a doubt, give Freight Claims a call first. 1–800–742–6315 (select by Commodity type)

You will receive an acknowledgement which will contain the related NS claim number within 30 days of receipt. You should expect a payment, settlement offer or declination within 120 days. If the handling of your claim requires additional time past the 120 days, you will receive 60 day updates until a payment, settlement offer or declination is made by NS.
