Operations Supervisor Training (OST) Program
Are you looking for an exciting and challenging career supervising railroad field operations?
Norfolk Southern is currently seeking professionals with industrial supervisory experience to become leaders in the freight transportation industry. Due to the managerial responsibilities of these positions, previous supervisory experience is a requirement for consideration.
The Operations Supervisor Trainee program is a training program that will enhance your past work experience by providing railroad specific training. This training is focused on one of the following Operating Departments: Engineering, Intermodal Operations, Mechanical, or Transportation Operations departments.
The ideal OST candidates typically have experience in one or more of the following industries:
Maintenance of Way
Track Maintenance
- Construction, Road Maintenance, Civil Engineering, and Manufacturing.
Maintenance Equipment
- Heavy Equipment Repair and Operation, Heavy Equipment Fabrication
Communications and Signals
- Electrical, Telecommunication, Radio and Construction.
Intermodal Operations
- Trucking, Intermodal, Supply Chain Management, Container Shipping, and Port/Dock Operations
Mechanical
- Large Operation Maintenance, Heavy Repair, and Manufacturing.
Transportation
- Transportation Management, Trucking, Shipping, Logistics Management, Supply Chain Management
Compensation
The OST program is a paid 12-month program, during which trainees are eligible for the corporate bonus. Below is the training salary for each program.

After promotion into your first position, your salary is primarily driven by performance. You will be eligible for merit increases to your salary based on individual performance and the bonus program rewards you on corporate performance.

Relocation
The railroad industry is faced with ever-changing demands. Thus, our supervisory workforce must be flexible in an ever-changing environment. Relocation is common for our supervisor workforce, but NS helps ease the burden with a comprehensive relocation package. A willingness to relocate is necessary for consideration in the OST program.
Included in this package is:

- Final move travel expenses

Training
The OST program is a paid 12-month training program. Operations Supervisor Trainees will, in essence, be paid to learn how to do the job that they will be placed in upon successful completion of the training program.
During the operations instruction portion of the program, there will be classroom instruction on operations as well as on-the-job training in the field.
In addition, students will receive classroom instruction with opportunities to practice the skills required of a successful supervisor.
You will frequently travel during the training period, with instruction in our training facilities in Atlanta, GA; McDonough, GA; Norfolk, VA and in your assigned territory. More than likely, you will be assigned a different Training Location than where you currently live.
During the training program, you will receive two weeks of Professional Skills Training, which includes: Time Management, Situational Leadership, Conflict Resolution and Presentation Training. We will provide you with the latest management tools to measure quality performance. Safety is a common thread that runs through all our training.
You will be assigned a Training Coordinator and a member of our Employee Development group to guide your training during the OST program.
