Mechanical

Overview

As a mechanical trainee, you will be developing skills related to maintenance of our extensive fleet of rail cars and locomotives. As you prepare for a position as a mechanical supervisor, you will learn inspection and repair procedures while becoming familiar with the compliance standards of Norfolk Southern, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). Interested candidates must be willing to relocate across our 22 state operating territory, travel and respond to calls in off duty hours.

What We Look For in a Candidate

Norfolk Southern is looking for individuals interested in supervisory and management opportunities. Candidates should possess a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or industrial engineering for this program. Leadership ability, communication skills and a commitment to teamwork are vital. Candidates should be knowledgeable in MS Office Suite and have the capacity to learn computer applications quickly. Candidates must be willing to relocate multiple times across the Norfolk Southern system, work non-standard shifts and weekends and be available to travel as needed.
Typically, trainees are assigned to one of 11 field division headquarters or eight system locomotive shops for the trainee program. Upon completion of the program, trainees are promoted to a front line supervisory position. This promotion usually requires relocation.

After Training

Upon successful completion of the program, a trainee will be promoted to the position of mechanical supervisor. This position is typically responsible for supervising employees in the maintenance and repair of rail equipment, troubleshooting of mechanical and electrical systems and training employees.

Mechanical supervisors may be assigned to a locomotive shop, freight car running repair facility, locomotive servicing facility or train yard operation. Positions include shift work with non-traditional hours and rest days. To advance within the organization, candidates must be willing to relocate multiple times during their career and demonstrate their ability to assume increasing amounts of responsibility.
