Design & Construction

Overview

The primary goal of the Design & Construction Department (D&C) training program is to prepare individuals to assume positions as either a Design Engineer in the D&C Design Section, or a Construction Project Engineer in the D&C Construction Department. Some individuals with specialized skills may also be trained so they may assume positions related to the Real Estate, Mapping, Utility, or Architectural engineering areas of D&C.

What We Look For in a Candidate

A bachelor of science in civil engineering (or appropriately applicable related field) is required. A desire to obtain a professional engineer’s license is strongly encouraged. Successful candidates will possess strong interpersonal skills, and must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. The ability to be self-motivated, assume a high degree of responsibility, and work under pressure is a position requirement.

The Training Program

Preparation for all careers paths in the D&C begins with a training program that consists of both field and classroom training. This training program will expose the Trainee to many areas of railroad operations, as well as different aspects of the design and construction of railroad facilities and related track infrastructure. Trainees will work side by side with seasoned engineering personnel who will provide exposure to the duties and skills associated with various D&C functions.

Trainees are assigned to Atlanta, GA, the headquarters of the Design & Construction Department. However, much of the program features on-the-job training and frequent travel to project locations across the NS system is required. Most of the day-to-day technical training occurs while at work sites or in the Atlanta, GA, offices. However, trainees also participate in formal classroom training at various other locations, including McDonough, GA, and Norfolk, VA. The classroom training will be used to introduce the trainee to basic railroad operations, safety rules and procedures, management skills and Norfolk Southern company principles. In addition, the classroom training allows trainees to network with their peers from many different departments.

After Training

Upon completion of the D&C training program, participants are usually promoted to an entry level position in the Design Section, Construction Department, or Engineering Service Group. The duration of the D&C training program is typically 12 months. This duration may be customized to complement a Trainee’s prior professional and/or educational experience, and is also governed by the availability of promotional opportunities for the Trainee.
