Communications & Signals

Overview

Communications and Signals (C&S) trainees gain experience in installing all types of signal equipment used on the railroad, including wayside and crossing signal systems, defect detectors, automatic equipment identification (AEI) systems, and classification yard systems.  You will also learn all aspects of our C&S systems and devices, including design, construction, maintenance, safety compliance and inspection.  The trainee will be working outdoors in a predominately field-oriented position, responsible for the supervisor of technicians.  Interested candidates must be willing to relocate across our 22 state operating territory, work on call, and travel.

What We Look For in a Candidate

A bachelor of science in electrical or electronics technology engineering is preferred for this position.  Interested applicants must have a desire to work outdoors in a hands-on, predominately field-oriented and high responsible position.  Successful candidates will possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work under pressure.  A willingness to relocate and travel is a must, as the C&S supervisor’s “office” is his or her assigned territory which is part of Norfolk Southern’s 21,000 mile network.

After Training

Once the training period has been completed, the trainee will be promoted to either a C&S supervisor’s position located on one of Norfolk Southern’s 11 operating divisions or a signal construction supervisor’s position located on one of Norfolk Southern three operating division.

A position as a C&S supervisor puts you on the ground level of insuring proper operation of communications and signal systems on your assigned territory.  You and your assigned work force are responsible for providing safe and reliable operations of C&S equipment and systems to allow movement of traffic over Norfolk Southern territories.  You get “hands-on” experience with C&S maintenance employees who are responsible for daily operation of C&S systems which contribute to providing a safe workplace for employees as well as a safe environment for members of the public. In addition, supervisors also have the responsibility to deal with matters that involve local, county and state government officials as well as the general public along our right of way.
