2009 Local Colors Festival
Roanoke, Va.
May 16, 2009
On May 16, 2009, Elmwood Park in Roanoke, VA came alive with the 19th annual Local Colors Festival. Over 80 countries participated in the event which recognizes and embraces people of diverse origins, races, and ethnic backgrounds. Norfolk Southern had 35 volunteers participate in the free, family-friendly festival. The volunteers enjoyed the music, arts, crafts, food, dress, and language of the many cultures represented. Raffle prizes were awarded every hour and Norfolk Southern contributed a significant number of these prizes.
As part of Local Colors, Habitat for Humanity, with the help of NS volunteers, built all the exterior wall panels for a home on Morningside St in southeast Roanoke. It was a beautiful spring day for the outdoor event and over 20,000 people attended from Roanoke and the surrounding area. The Diversity Council had volunteers from Roanoke and two additional locations participate.
Norfolk Southern volunteers included employees, spouses, family, and friends. Multiple generations worked side by side to make the Festival a success for all. Throughout the year Local Colors works with schools, colleges, neighborhoods, retirement communities, government, businesses, and civic organizations to promote diversity and multi-cultural understanding.
