Diversity Council Member Criteria

Norfolk Southern’s success depends upon its people. Diversity allows us to leverage the capabilities and experiences of our entire workforce. Norfolk Southern’s Diversity Council helps facilitate an environment that allows diversity to flourish.

The Diversity Council at Norfolk Southern is a corporate-sponsored group of selected employees who represent a cross-section of the organization. The Diversity Council guides Norfolk Southern’s diversity efforts based on a clear charter and operating with the full, visible support of the company’s senior executive officers.

Membership on the NS Diversity Council is a privilege open to those employees who:

  • demonstrate a strong commitment to the organization as a whole
  • are respected employees of NS
  • are in good standing and considered high performers by their supervisors and peers
  • are willing to serve as formal and informal opinion leaders within NS, promoting a greater understanding of diversity and its value to Norfolk Southern and its employees
  • have demonstrated their commitment to teamwork and respect for others through activities within and outside of Norfolk Southern
  • are able to represent a varied mix of people within the organization
  • communicate well with others
  • are able to commit to the demands and time requirements of the council membership without compromising their work demands
  • are capable of both self-assertion and compromise
  • are comfortable representing the council to senior management

Diversity Council: Council Responsibilities

The Norfolk Southern Diversity Council assists the organization’s efforts to create a more inclusive and productive workplace. Responsibilities of the Council include:

  • Assists in identifying and improving processes and practices to fully utilize the talents of our diverse workforce
  • Develop work plans and implements approved initiatives that will foster diversity within Norfolk Southern
  • Communicates with employees on the status of established goals and objectives
  • Serves as a liaison to community groups and referral sources
  • Models behaviors which demonstrate a commitment to diversity
