In observance of the Thanksgiving Holiday, Norfolk Southern will curtail (non-intermodal) freight operations beginning 7:00 A.M. on Thursday, November 26, 2009 and resume full operations at 7:00 A.M. on Friday, November 27. Interline gateways will remain open for traffic delivered from connecting carriers and passenger trains will continue to operate through the Holiday. Customers with critical shipments, particularly unit trains, where customer operations will continue through the holiday, should contact their Customer Service or Marketing Representative regarding service requirements. Where local service (set/pull) will be required through the holiday period or for questions regarding specific shipments, customers are encouraged to contact their Central Yard Operations or Customer Service representative. Paper, Clay & Forest ProductsInformation on: Norfolk Southern’s Paper Distribution Center (PDC) service combines economical rail transportation with flexible truck delivery. Goods are moved long distances by boxcar to warehouses, from which trucks provide quick delivery to final destinations. Norfolk Southern serves some 40 paper mills in the Southeast. Norfolk Southern is focusing on extending business into the Northeast and Midwest and attracting historically non-rail customers. The “Waste Line Express” is Norfolk Southern’s and the Roanoke Valley Resource Authority’s private-public partnership that was the first to use rail as the sole transportation link between a solid-waste transfer station and a landfill. Specialized EquipmentNorfolk Southern has received 157 73-foot centerbeam cars for dimensional lumber loading. These cars offer customers ease of loading and unloading. They have self-contained cable tie-down assemblies that eliminate the need for banding materials and their disposal. Norfolk Southern has a fleet of 305 50-foot high-cube boxcars that allow heavier loading by the paper industry. Norfolk Southern has constructed track to a distribution center in Detroit that is handling lumber and building materials. The center gives Norfolk Southern a presence along the Detroit River, and is the only water-to-rail facility there. The facility includes a 140,000-square-foot warehouse, which gives Norfolk Southern the capability of handling multiple shipments of lumber, brick, shingles and coiled steel rods, among other commodities, from this site.
