Norfolk Southern’s Paper Distribution Center (PDC) service combines economical rail transportation with flexible truck delivery. Goods are moved long distances by boxcar to warehouses, from which trucks provide quick delivery to final destinations.

Norfolk Southern serves some 40 paper mills in the Southeast. Norfolk Southern is focusing on extending business into the Northeast and Midwest and attracting historically non-rail customers.

The “Waste Line Express” is Norfolk Southern’s and the Roanoke Valley Resource Authority’s private-public partnership that was the first to use rail as the sole transportation link between a solid-waste transfer station and a landfill. The partnership emphasizes safety and protection of the environment and is an innovation in the waste industry.

Serving shippers and receivers of:

  • Lumber and wood products
  • Pulpboard and paper products
  • Wood fiber
  • Woodpulp
  • Scrap paper
  • Clay
  • Municipal wastes

Specialized Equipment

Norfolk Southern has received 157 73-foot centerbeam cars for dimensional lumber loading. These cars offer customers ease of loading and unloading. They have self-contained cable tie-down assemblies that eliminate the need for banding materials and their disposal.

Norfolk Southern has a fleet of 305 50-foot high-cube boxcars that allow heavier loading by the paper industry.

Norfolk Southern has constructed track to a distribution center in Detroit that is handling lumber and building materials. The center gives Norfolk Southern a presence along the Detroit River, and is the only water-to-rail facility there. The facility includes a 140,000-square-foot warehouse, which gives Norfolk Southern the capability of handling multiple shipments of lumber, brick, shingles and coiled steel rods, among other commodities, from this site.

Pricing Announcements

  • On July 1, 2009, NS will not be taking increases on NSEC 4350 Sections 1 and 2.  Customers will see new versions of both quotes issued as we will have some behind the scene changes that will not affect rates or routes.  Please note these rates are not subject to fuel surcharge. These rates have an open-ended expiration and therefore NS may choose to take an increase on these rates giving customers the customary 20 days notice for public rate authorities.

NS encourages you to sign up for Access NS at https://www2.nscorp.com/accessNS/ or contact our Electronic Commerce Hotline at (800) 235-5551 to receive automatic updates of these quotes as they are available.

If you have any question, please contact your NS Sales Representative or Katie Fletcher at knfletch@nscorp.com.

  • Effective June 1, 2009, the NSQ 40241 mileage scale scrap paper rates will be taking a 2% increase. If you have any questions concerning these rates, please contact Rose Zawistowski at rose.zawistowski@nscorp.com.

  • September 1, 2008 Kaolin Public Rate Increase

Effective 9/1/2008, NS will take a market based rate increase of 11 percent on the majority of our public kaolin clay.  Most all of these rates are found in NSRQ 32952, various sections or in our mileage scale NSRQ 43310.  There are some exceptions to the amount of increase such as short-haul intraplant traffic, export traffic to Savannah and traffic to BNSF.  The short-haul rates in NSRQ 63392 and the GA export public rates will increase 7 percent.  Kaolin public rates are not subject to fuel surcharge and have no expiration date, but are subject to change on 20 days notice.   This increase does not affect contract rates.

If you have questions about the rates, please contact your NS Sales Representative, or Donald Self at dlself@nscorp.com.
