Boxcar

A boxcar is an enclosed car with doors in the side. It can have plug doors which can be opened with a hand crank, or it can have sliding doors of which some can be opened with the assistance of a forklift. It is used for general purpose service and for lading that must be protected from the weather. Major commodities include: paper, lumber, rubber, general merchandise, clay, beverages, canned goods, and plywood.

Coil Car

A coil car is classified as a gondola freight car with a lading trough, cradle or lading anchors. A coil car can be covered or uncovered. Lading includes: rolled coiled steel, rolled coiled aluminum.

Flat Car

A flat car is a freight car having a flat floor or deck lid on the under-frame. It has no sides or roof. Flat cars are designed for handling commodities not requiring protection from the weather.

Gondola

The common gondola is a freight car with low sides and ends with a solid floor and no roof. It is used mainly for transportation of iron, steel, coal and other lading not requiring protection from the weather. Special types of gondolas are built with high sides for light commodities. Some newer gondolas are constructed of aluminum for use in coal service.

Hopper

The open top hopper is a freight car designed for handling bulk commodities such as aggregate, coal or woodchips. Hopper cars have floor sheets that slope from the car sides and ends to form a series of pockets or hoppers which when opened can discharge the bulk lading by gravity through hopper doors operated from outside the car.

A covered hopper has a permanent roof, roof hatches and bottom openings for unloading. They are used for carrying cement, grain or other bulk commodities needing protection from the weather.
