Boxcar
The automotive boxcar is an enclosed car with doors in the side. It has a double regular center or a double plug center. It also features rub rails, reflectorization, rack retainers, bulkheads, and column load dividers. It is used in transporting auto parts that must be protected from the weather. The automotive flat car is a car having a flat floor with no sides or roof. The flat car is designed for handling automotive frames that do not require protection from the weather. Norfolk Southern currently leases automotive flat cars from TTX. They have an inside platform length of 89' 4" and have a loaded capacity of 70 tons. These cars contain special equipment, owned by the customer, for securing the frames for transit. There are two main types of multi-level cars that are used. The bi-level car has two levels for loading and the tri-level car has three levels for loading. The manufacturers decide which type of car they need based on the height of the vehicles to be loaded on to the rail car. The Automotive Group monitors the movement of these railcars to ensure that each loading location has the proper amount of empty cars on hand. Uni-levels are new to the industry.
