Norfolk Southern people make the difference
Lessons of 2004: In my judgment …1. The business has changed. 2. It changed very fast. 3. We succeeded because we were able to adapt. We were there when our customers Therefore: For the future …1. Be ready to respond quickly to changing conditions. 2. Have the property, the assets and, most important, the people in shape to respond. 3. Always emphasize the best service and be prepared to deliver it. 4. Keep our core values – be the safest, most customer-focused, and we will be the best transportation company in the world. Overriding lesson:

| Mike Patrick, Jeff Williams, John Turner and Cedric Mason (l-r) display the "Pride of the Prarie" safety award. |
A committee of employees worked to develop the award over a three-month period, taking advantage of their diverse range of backgrounds, ideas and skills. Committee members included Mike Patrick, water service repairman, Decatur; John Turner, carman, Kansas City ; Cedrick Mason, carman, St. Louis ; and Jeff Williams, carman, St. Louis. Patrick was NS’ 2004 Hammond Award nominee. The division’s mechanical department produced the award. Williams created the bell’s unique cover.
“Our goal always is double zeros – no incidents and no injuries,” said Chuck Sloan, division manager mechanical operations.
“This award, developed by our employees for our employees, has special meaning and will be a tremendous incentive to each of our territories. It exceeded my vision and expectations. Their skill is evident in the finished product.
“Our ultimate goal is for a perfect safety performance for the entire division. When that happens, the award will be shared by everyone who has dedicated themselves to accomplishing our mission,” Sloan said.
The first time the award will be presented will be at the division’s annual awards banquet in April 2005. The award will be on display at the Illinois Division system display booth during the Norfolk system awards banquet in March 2005.
Schneider Logistics named Norfolk Southern Intermodal Carrier of the Year.
NS was among a number of companies honored by Schneider Logistics Inc., Schneider Brokerage and Schneider Intermodal during a carrier recognition conference in October.
More than 120 carriers from all modes of transportation in the United States , Canada and Mexico attended the conference to discuss industry issues affecting their businesses, including fuel and capacity. Economic advisor David Hale and fuel specialists Bruce Gress and Mark Hazelwood from Pilot Travel Centers LLC delivered educational presentations that offered attendees perspective on economic indicators and industry trends. Tracy Rosser, vice president of corporate traffic at Wal-Mart, offered a shipper’s perspective on supply chain trends and challenges.
All attending carriers received certificates of recognition for their work on behalf of Schneider and its customers. Schneider Logistics honored 14 carriers from various modes with Carrier of the Year awards based on on-time performance, ease of
doing business, claims performance, e-business capabilities and integration with Schneider Logistics. Schneider Brokerage named seven transportation providers as Carrier of the Year, and Schneider Intermodal recognized four providers with the same honor.
“Schneider Logistics is proud to host the premier recognition event for transportation providers that encourages industry discussion and education while recognizing the critical role carriers play in the supply chain,” said George Grossardt, vice president of alliance services at Schneider Logistics. “Our carriers consistently deliver against the highest levels of service excellence and go the extra mile to ensure customer satisfaction.”
Norfolk Southern played a key role in the deployment of equipment and supplies in support of troops deployed under Operation Iraqi Freedom 3.

| NS transports armored personnel carriers to the Port of Savannah for delivery to Iraq |
NS, along with CSX Transportation and Star Intermodal, loaded, transported and off-loaded nearly 1,200 carloads of wheeled and tracked vehicles and containers in a 30-day period in November and December. The deployment included units of the U.S. Army’s 3rd Infantry Division based at Ft. Benning and Ft. Stewart, Ga., as well as other units based at Ft. Sill , Okla. , Ft. Campbell, Ky., and Ft. Riley, Kan. All shipments moved in unit trains through the Port of Savannah.
“This effort took an immense amount of coordination and commitment by many NS people in many departments,” said Robyn Louderback, national account manager, MODALGISTICS ®.
“We could not have achieved what we did in a four-week period without the extraordinary level of professionalism shown by our people.”
Dave Tally, Georgia Division superintendent, credited Bill Hendricks, superintendent terminals, Savannah; Josh Lafferty, terminal trainmaster, Savannah; Paul Wheat, National Customer Service Center; Steve Ewers, assistant superintendent Alabama Division; Mike Ebuna, senior director operations and locomotive power; Eileen Roth, operations manager, Columbus, Ga.; Roger Jones, car distribution unit; and Mike Hess, agent, and Benny Holland, carman, both of Columbus, Ga.
Brooke Balbach, product manager government services, said, “Communication among all the people involved in these moves was essential to our success. It gave us flexibility and helped keep things moving. Government business is extremely important to NS, and we’re working hard to become a larger, more critical link in their vital supply chain. We are pleased to be part of such an important effort.”
A murder attempt on his police officer father in 1971 inspired Baird Davis, conductor, Middletown, Ohio, to write a book about the incident, hoping to find out who was behind the attempt.
“As a child, I was confused as to why no one was ever arrested,” said Davis .
“I had to have a bodyguard accompany me to school at 8 years of age.” This sparked his interest in the matter, which he later pursued as a law enforcement officer.
Based on true events, “The Middletown Myth” is a fictional account of the murder attempt.
“As an officer, I gained insight as to what happened. That’s why I’m not an officer today,” Davis said. “I wrote this book basically for the locals here. I felt this was something that people should be aware of. I wanted to get this knowledge out there, hoping that someone would come forth so we can solve the crime.”
The book has garnered national attention and is available at barnesandnoble.com, amazon.com and through the Web site www.middletownmyth.com.
