Candidates enroll in a 'fast track' program that teaches the railroad business through training, mentoring, and daily interactions with various departments throughout the corporation.

Communications and Signals -- Electrical or Electronics Engineering. Be responsible for the safe and efficient installation of all types of signal equipment used on the railroad and ensure that these systems are operating in accordance with company and governmental rules and procedures.
Customer Account Representative Business, Economics, Marketing, Management, Liberal Arts. Be responsible for an accounts receivable ranging from $2-$12 million for 2-200 customers. Team with many departments, railroads and customers to handle billing inquiries and resolve billing discrepancies.
Design and Construction Civil Engineering. Be the engineer to design and facilitate construction of NS' facilities and track structure. Start as an Engineering Technician, assisting the engineers in surveying projects and design.
Information Technology Computer Science, Information Technology, Management Information Science, Computer Engineering. Design and engineer the software that keeps the trains running. The IT group supplies the technology and the data for the entire corporation, enabling the rest of us to do our jobs. During training learn about the Norfolk Southern data processing environment: standards, procedures, and preferred programming techniques.
Maintenance of Way Civil engineering. Train to be one of NS' Track Supervisors and lead a rail maintenance and construction team to insure the safe travel of thousands of rail cars a year across the track structure and bridges of the railroad.
Marketing Marketing, International Business, Economics, MBA. Deal directly with the lifeline of NS the customer. Generate new business and help keep the established business with competitive pricing, market development and logistics packages. Through competitive analysis, strategically place NS in the Thoroughbred's corner.
Mechanical Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Apply your book knowledge training to be a first-line supervisor in a mechanical shop responsible for the maintenance of rail cars and locomotives. Troubleshoot electrical, computer, and PLC systems. Develop engineering solutions for equipment and system failures.
Transportation Engineering, Management, Operations, Logistics, Liberal Arts. Join the rail industry's most respected management team responsible for the safe and efficient operations of freight trains across NS' 22 state territory. Train to be a Trainmaster, the supervisor of conductors and engineers at a rail terminal or a road territory.
