Norfolk Southern Corporation, a Fortune 300 company, is seeking an Assistant Manager Hazardous Materials to work in Roanoke, VA.
The incumbent must provide timely, comprehensive advisory and technical services to management for the transportation, handling, storage, and delivery of hazardous materials and waste. The position responsibilities include: coordination of rail emergency response activities involving spills or discharges of hazardous materials; training of corporate and outside agency personnel in recognition, identification, and handling of hazardous materials in normal and emergency operations; supervising employees; developing and maintaining emergency response plans; conducting regulatory compliance audits; maintaining emergency response equipment; conducting statistical analyses; and preparing reports. Position requires being on-call 24x7 and significant overnight travel.
An undergraduate degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Business, or other related field; and experience in handling rail emergencies is strongly preferred. A graduate degree or recognized certifications such as a CHMM or PE is a plus. The successful candidate will possess strong management and organizational skills, knowledge in DOT hazardous materials regulations, and familiarization with tank cars and other rail equipment. Other skills desired include proficiency in written and verbal communications, problem analysis and computer competency, and the ability to work as a team player.
