Norfolk Southern has co-operative education opportunities for individuals with a desire for excellence. Norfolk Southern is a Fortune 300 company and a Fortune 100 transportation company. Norfolk Southern is a Virginia based holding company that employs approximately 30,000 people. Primarily in the railroad freight business, Norfolk Southern Corporation controls Norfolk Southern Railway, and Pocahontas Land Development Corporation. The railroad system lines extend through 22 states primarily in the Southeast, Midwest, and the Province of Ontario, Canada.

The Marketing division is looking for co-op candidates with at least a 3.0 GPA/4.0 overall; 3.5/4.0 in major. Prefer Information Systems, Management Science, Computer Science or Transportation/Logistics candidates. No travel/relocation/living allowance provided. Students must commit to at least two alternating semesters to be considered for the co-op position. Salary for this full-time position depends on class level at the time of employment.

All co-ops who are active employees on or after January 1, 2005, will be paid according to the following:

Location: 110 Franklin Road, SE, Roanoke, Virginia
Work Period: Spring, Summer, or Fall
Hours: Monday through Friday; generally 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Description: The co-op is assigned to one of seven areas (Metals, Construction, Agriculture, Chemicals, Coal Business Group, Shortlines or Electronic Commerce). The co-op will assist Managers with data input into Norfolk Southern marketing database systems and Excel spreadsheets. Major responsibilities to include accurate and efficient data entry of rate information as well as quality graphics and spreadsheet presentations. Student will also be responsible for some analysis work on existing and potential traffic patterns and route systems.

Skills: Proficient knowledge of MS Office 97 - Professional software. Would prefer experience in an office or business environment. Must be able to interact effectively with all levels of supervision. Should be a self starter willing to study reference material to resolve problems, make suggestions for improvements, and design projects.
