Willie Welcome
NCSC Coordinator
Atlanta

A few days ago, I was leaving the terminal at Hartsfield-Jackson International airport and I noticed two distinguished young men sitting outside talking. What made them so distinguished wasn't their looks, skin color, physical physique or their mannerisms. What set them apart from others was simply what they were wearing. The two men were wearing proudly their everyday uniforms - the uniform of a United States Military person. They were members of the United States Army sitting, talking, enjoying the sight of people moving about, but probably most important excited about traveling home.

I passed them without saying a word, nodding or even making eye contact. After walking past them, I realized that I was truly wrong for not recognizing these fine young men. I could not continue on to where I was going without returning to where they sat. Upon returning to where they sat, I said hello and asked how they were doing? They responded and I told them that I personally wanted to say thanks and was proud of all service personnel serving their county. I also stated that I truly appreciated what they were doing and all the sacrifices they have made and continue to make for all Americans. Their response was one of surprise and gratitude.

So if you see a person in a military uniform, please let them know that they are recognized and appreciated for their outstanding duty to our country. Please don't pass any military person without acknowledging their presence even if a word is not exchanged - quickly look them in the eye and believe me you will like what you see - a very proud and brave person.

If you have the opportunity don't let it pass, say thank you to our military personnel who may pass through our everyday walk in life. Believe me, they will like to hear that we care and appreciate their work to protect us from our enemies.

Don't pass up on the next opportunity to say thanks, if nothing else, to our military personnel.
