National Hispanic Cultural Center
In keeping with New Mexico ’s rich Hispanic heritage, the Department of Cultural Affairs and its Hispanic Cultural Division are developing a world-class facility in Albuquerque ’s South Valley to preserve, interpret, and showcase Hispanic arts and lifeways.

In 1998, a sixteen-acre site was chosen for the $34 million project along the east side of the Rio Grande at Fourth Street and Avenida César Chávez in an area known as the Barelas neighborhood. Barelas, a traditionally Hispanic neighborhood, has historically been a crossroads for New Mexico ’s people. The community was settled for its proximity to a natural ford in the Río Grande and the Camino Real, the Spanish colonial era Royal Road used primarily for trade between Mexico and northern New Mexico . Later, the rail yards made Barelas a vibrant and economically important neighborhood in Albuquerque .
