Since the turn of the 20th century, many of Harold Mobley's ancestors have been members of the Norfolk Southern family and the family of its predecessor line, Southern Railway Company. He is proud to extend his heritage of leadership into the 21st century. Hailing from Winnsboro, S.C., Harold presently serves on the NS Diversity Council and was part of the original task force that selected council members. He has also been a faculty member for the National Railway Labor Conference seminars. Harold does not limit his practice of leadership by example to the workplace. In his community, he has served as an officer in his neighborhood civic league. Below, Harold discusses his views on leadership.

What motivates you to be a leader in your community and workplace?

As a descendent of a long line of African-American railroaders, I recognize that I have realized opportunities that could not even have been dreamed of in the past. During my 32-year career with Norfolk Southern, I have held various positions that have cast me in the role of a leader. I have a deep sense of responsibility to make the most of the advantages I have received in life and to share them with others.

How did you get involved in your community?

It seems that there is always more to do than there are resources to do it. The key was to let involvement become a part of my daily life. My father and mother have had the most profound affect on my life, and they set an extremely high moral ground by always emphasizing the Golden Rule.

What qualities make someone a good leader?

I believe the most fundamental attribute of a great leader is someone who values and respects others. This respect builds teamwork, and a strong team can meet almost any challenge. That is why leadership by example is so important to me and motivates the style in which I lead in the workplace. I can expect no more of others than I am willing to do myself. Honesty and integrity are also a must. The rest is easy.
