At Norfolk Southern, we're dedicated to providing customers with quality coal cars.
Since 1989, 2,450 new general service hoppers have been added to the fleet, and close to 600 new high-capacity aluminum gondolas, 600 high-capacity stainless steel gondolas, and 400 rapid-discharge aluminum hoppers have been introduced into dedicated cycle-train service.
We also are committed to refurbishing our coal fleet by rebodying older hoppers effectively adding 20 years of service to each car.
The rebody program has converted more than 17,000 coal hoppers to high cube coal gondolas that handle a greater lading weight than the older hoppers.
The rebody program also returned 11,300 cars back to the serviceable fleet as conventional coal hoppers and 700 cars as high-capacity coke hoppers.
