Norfolk Southern understands that you use our schedule to set your schedule. If your shipment is delayed in transit, Norfolk Southern will give you additional storage free time at the terminal. Now you can reschedule your appointments without incurring additional cost. This storage program, which ties terminal free time direct to our performance, has helped NS improve overall terminal throughput, creating terminal capacity that helps improve service and make room for growth. Please note the following regarding this program:
Free Time:
- If the equipment is grounded no later than three hours after the published scheduled availability and is:
- grounded between 12:00 AM and 3:59 PM, free time will be the day of grounding plus the following one business day
- grounded between 4:00 PM and 11:59 PM, unit will be considered “grounded” at 12:01AM the following business day and free time will be that day plus the following one business day
- If the equipment is grounded later than three hours after the published scheduled availability, free time will be the day of grounding plus the following three business days
Participating Lanes: This program applies on all NS local traffic at destination. It does not apply on origin storage or on interline shipments.
Equipment: Applies only on domestic equipment (EMP, rail trailers, private trailers (28’, 45’, 48’ & 53’) and private containers (48’ & 53’).
Charges: Once the free time expires on units at these terminals, standard storage charges will apply. Note this program only applies to NS rail storage and will not impact standard per diem or REZ-1 charges.
Notes:
- Units grounding on a weekend or holiday are considered to have been grounded at 12:01 AM the following business day (the next Monday–Friday that is not a holiday). A unit will continue to incur storage charges if its free time has expired prior to the start of the weekend or holiday.
- Free time begins at time of grounding (as indicated on the notification fax). This program does not use the notification date/time to determine when free-time begins.
