Getting Started
If you have a shipment that you would like to move Intermodal, we suggest contacting an Intermodal Marketing Company (IMC) or one of our truckload partners. These companies know our services, have pricing agreements with us, and will coordinate our rail move with local railhead-to-customer door delivery. If you do not know how to get in contact with one of these companies, please contact your local Norfolk Southern representative and they can provide you with additional details.
How does rail Intermodal work?

|
For domestic shipments, an Intermodal move typically begins with an empty, railroad owned container or trailer delivered to the shipper's dock from the nearest NS Intermodal ramp facility. Equipment sizes and types can range from 48' to 53' containers and trailers. Customers can provide their own equipment, or rent 48' and 53' high cube containers from the railroads. Once loaded, it is picked up and delivered to NS's Intermodal ramp facility for furtherance to destination.
The container or trailer, once at the rail terminal, is planned for a particular train. NS utilizes leading edge technology to ensure timely and accurate loading of shipments.
Containers are typically loaded on the train in "double stack" which allows for twice as many shipments to be moved on one train, resulting in cost savings and transportation efficiencies realized by our customers. When it is time to load the unit onto the train the
terminal hostler positions the container or trailer beside the rail car that will be used for the linehaul. A crane then carefully lifts the container or trailer and positions it onto the car where it is secured and ready for rail departure.
Along its journey, NS provides full, online visibility of the freight as well as a customer service center for any enroute issues. When the load reaches destination, NS electronically notifies the local trucker that the unit is available for final delivery to the destination dock. The trucker promptly picks up the load and delivers it by appointment to the facility.
