Infrastructure improvements supporting our ongoing initiative to implement Positive Train Control (PTC) are planned to begin Sunday, July 29th, near Chattanooga, TN. This work requires a 36-hour total mainline outage with all shipments moving between Memphis and the Northeast/Southeast being impacted. Trains will be diverted, when possible, to minimize transit and availability delays, however, delays of 18-24 hours are anticipated.
About Positive Train Control
PTC describes technology mandated by the Rail Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (RSIA) that is designed to automatically stop or slow a train before certain accidents occur. In particular, PTC is designed to prevent train-to-train collisions, derailments caused by excessive speed, unauthorized incursions by trains onto sections of track where repairs are being made, and movement of a train through a track switch left in the wrong position.
