Smart Yards Using Rubber Tire Gantry Cranes

Norfolk Southern is applying high tech solutions to increase efficiency at our Intermodal terminals. This new crane technology will improve service and expedite motor carriers operating through the facility.

This new gate technology uses high-res cameras and optical character recognition for faster, more efficient processing at gates. The result: a reduction in overall driver dwell time. 

 The Bobtail Express Lane helps increase efficiency. It increases gate throughput by allowing draymen entering or exiting bobtail to use a separate line as draymen carrying containers or trailers. 

The Yard Management System is available at all NS terminals. The Yard Management System provides better traffic flows, more accurate terminal inventories, and increased train loading and unloading efficiency, and shorter terminal times.

Web-based tools like AccessNS help make terminals run more efficiently. AccessNS allows customers to submit and view billing instructions, trace shipments, check terminal inventories, and pay freight bills.
