Service Update

December 7, 2015

Norfolk Southern continues to realize the positive benefits of its ongoing initiatives as it relates to operating performance.   By increasing qualified crew counts and improving locomotive availability, through the end of the 3rd quarter, we have achieved year-over-year improvements of 3% and 6% in our Train Speed and Terminal Dwell measures respectively. Most recently, NS’ service continues to accelerate as seen by our 4th quarter to date measures improving an additional 6% and 1% for Train Speed and Terminal Dwell respectively compared to the end of the 3rd quarter 2015.

In addition, we completed two notable Infrastructure projects including the absorption of certain lines of the Delaware & Hudson Railroad as well as capacity expansion at the Rutherford Intermodal terminal.  As we continue through the fourth quarter, NS will continue to focus on further improvement to its service performance.

Winter Preparedness

As we head into the winter season, Norfolk Southern’s Operations team has started its preparations to deal with severe weather conditions.  This includes reviewing safety and procedural checklists for operating in inclement weather, winterizing locomotives and other equipment, and increasing scheduled availability of Operations personnel in both our Service Center and at strategic points along the network.

Over the next several weeks, NS Customer Service will be sending out announcements confirming our operating plans during the upcoming holiday season.  We are taking the right steps to respond to weather challenges.

Resource Update and Improvement Activities

Crews

  • During the first three quarters of the year, NS increased qualified Train and Engine employees by 720 employees.  Crew hiring was concentrated in locations where NS has experienced new volume as a result of shifts in markets and commodities in recent years.  This has been offset by reductions in crew counts, either through relocations or furloughs, in other locations that have experienced a decline in volume.

Locomotives

  • In addition to the 75 locomotives we received in 2014, we have taken receipt of 100 additional locomotives this year.  Our average fleet age will decrease from these purchases and from rebuilds, thereby improving locomotive efficiency, reliability and productivity while also reducing maintenance expense.

Infrastructure

  • On September 17, NS completed its purchase of a portion of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad, which will provide shippers in Pennsylvania, New York and New England with improved services including direct run-through merchandise service with Pan Am Southern, increased frequency for local service, expanded NS bulk-transfer and warehouse locations, and increased track and infrastructure.   The transition of these lines to NS was completed with minimal disruption to our customers.

  • NS has completed and made operational an expansion of its Rutherford Intermodal terminal with the addition of new loading/unloading tracks, four additional support tracks, and additional parking capacity.

  • The newly expanded Moorman Yard at Bellevue, OH is fully integrated into the NS network, producing measurably reduced terminal dwell at Moorman Yard, as well as at complementary terminals at Elkhart, IN, Columbus, OH, and Conway, PA.

  • NS will continue to make line of road improvements and install Positive Train Control infrastructure at various locations across the network as noted in more detail below.

  • During the fourth quarter, NS expects to complete improvements to the Calumet Intermodal facility in Chicago, including an additional lift track, enhanced support track capacity, and parking.  The enhancements are expected to be operational in early Q1 2016.
