Internships offer entrée into a railroad career

Growing up, Max Waibel watched Norfolk Southern trains lumber past a railroad crossing near his neighborhood outside of Knoxville, Tenn. Years later, at a University of Tennessee job fair, an NS recruiter encouraged him to apply for a new summer internship program with the railroad’s Transportation Department.

More women are joining NS’ field operations workforce

Norfolk Southern continues to make gains in efforts to recruit and retain more women in field operations jobs. During the past year, NS hired record numbers of female conductor and management trainees.

Railroad a good fit for retired Navy chief petty officer and military advocate

Unsure of what she wanted to do in life, Susan Decker joined the Navy when she was 17. As a seaman recruit, she observed her 18th birthday at her first command post in Naples, Italy. Over the next 24 years, Decker found her direction while literally traveling the world.

During eight years in the U.S. Army, Tiffany Morris never encountered enemy fire. However, she faced something perhaps even tougher than the battlefield – informing families that their soldiers would not be coming home.

In the U.S. Air Force, Doug Widdis worked on the flight line to maintain and repair radar systems, radios, and flight controls on high-tech fighter aircraft. Every detail counted, because any slip-up could be disastrous.

During a 24-year career in the U.S. Army, Dwight Anderson patrolled the border of a divided Germany, trained deploying troops in armored warfare tactics at a California base, and survived bullets and improvised explosive devices in Iraq.

A commitment to employee diversity

During employee panel discussions at NS office locations in Norfolk and Atlanta, they talked about challenges facing women leaders, finding opportunities for career growth, the value of having and being a mentor, and maintaining a work-life balance.

Whether collecting school supplies for disadvantaged children, stocking thousands of pounds of canned goods at food banks, or cheering on Special Olympians, Norfolk Southern employees help improve the quality of life in their communities.

NS Volunteers Build Community Through Shelter Reading Program

Every month, NS volunteers in Norfolk and surrounding cities fan out in pairs to 11 shelters for the homeless and victims of domestic violence. Once there, these Thoroughbred Volunteers spend an hour or so reading aloud to children ages two through teens. 

An NS welcome to the Lunar New Year

Traditional Asian music, foods, arts, and pastimes took center stage as more than 100 people who work at Norfolk Southern’s Goode Building in Atlanta joined Asian colleagues Friday, Jan. 27, to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

Connecting with our communities

Seven years ago, NS partnered with a Girl Scout council in Virginia to create an industry-first railroad safety patch, “Explore Norfolk Southern.” Girls earn the patch by learning about rail safety, the environmental benefits of shipping by rail, and other essential railroad facts.

NS aims to convert freight from highway to rail

After a tough business year, Norfolk Southern has emerged as a stronger, more nimble company well-positioned to grow and adapt to a changing economy. That’s the word from CEO Jim Squires and Chief Marketing Officer Alan Shaw, who delivered an upbeat end-of-year message during a Dec. 7 employee town hall meeting in Norfolk.

Simone Harris: The world is changing

Since Simone Harris joined Norfolk Southern last year right out of college, people sometimes ask why she decided to pursue a career traditionally held by men. “I remind them that I know exactly what I’m getting into,” she said. “Many of them grew up in my dad’s generation, but the world is changing, and I stand on my own two feet.”

NS women making a difference

As a bridge and building supervisor, Ruth Brown breaks down gender stereotypes with as much intensity as she drives spikes into bridge ties. “I have to prove my mettle out here and do the same work as the men on the gang,” said Brown, who works on the Harrisburg Division.

Jessica Kappel: Stepping Up to a Large Challenge

As a mechanical supervisor at Norfolk Southern’s Roanoke Locomotive Shop, Kappel supervises employees who work on locomotive power assemblies and air compressors. When she was hired in June after completing the company’s yearlong management trainee program, she was the shop’s only female supervisor.
