Inclusion and Diversity

This is our workplace. Together we achieve more.

Harnessing the Strength of Our People Through Diversity and Inclusion:

Our strategy toward diversity and inclusion is key to Norfolk Southern’s success as a transportation leader. NS continues to create and sustain a company culture anchored by our core SPIRIT values and promotes inclusion and respect for our people, customers, and the global communities we serve.

Diversity and Inclusion Create a Culture Where People Can Thrive.

James A. Squires
Chairman, President and CEO

Diversity is a Norfolk Southern core value, and I am proud to be our company’s chief sponsor and champion of diversity and inclusion. During my military service, I gained a greater appreciation of different cultures and people. I feel very strongly about diversity and inclusion, both as a personal value and as a corporate value. They are keys to our corporate success and to our bottom line.

As a leading transportation service company, Norfolk Southern must recruit the most qualified and talented people to compete in the global marketplace. We strive to create an inclusive workplace where a wide range of perspectives and experiences are valued and respected.  In support of these efforts, the company has formed division and office diversity and inclusion councils across our network, empowering employees as ambassadors of diversity and inclusion.

In 2018, we expanded our commitment to a culture of inclusion by becoming the first Class I railroad to join CEO Action for Diversity and Inclusion, the largest CEO-driven business commitment to advance workplace diversity and inclusion. As CEO, I have pledged to encourage constructive conversations on diversity and inclusion, expand unconscious bias training, and share best practices with other companies. Cultivating a more diverse and inclusive company will engage employees, improve performance, and drive growth.

Diversity Makes Us Unique

At Norfolk Southern, we celebrate our individuality. Our employees are diverse not only in race, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, and military status, but also education, experiences, skills, and perspectives. By leveraging the unique backgrounds and viewpoints of nearly 27,000 employees, we create a culture of innovation, respect, and inclusion. This strengthens our organization by attracting, retaining, and developing the best talent to improve safety, service, and business results.

Inclusion Brings Us Together

Norfolk Southern promotes an inclusive work environment where all employees feel welcomed, respected, and engaged. Employees thrive in a workplace where differing viewpoints, ideas, and experiences are freely shared and valued. We encourage all employees to contribute their distinctive skills and capabilities to help us realize our vision of being the safest, most customer-focused, and successful transportation company in the world.
