When Norfolk’s Pier 6 was dedicated on Sept. 18, 1963, The Virginian-Pilot newspaper called it the “largest, most expensive, most efficient” coal-loading facility in the world. This advertisement stresses the technology employed in its construction, including more than 1,900 prestressed concrete piles.
